A Country Christmas
Our next concert is at Crossroads Methodist Church, Papakura on Sunday November 15, at 2.30pm.
The programme includes Bach's "Peasant Cantata", David Hamilton's "The Road to Bethlehem" and five short Australian Christmas carols by William G. James with words by John Wheeler.
Soloists for the Peasant Cantata are soprano Gina Sanders and baritone Jonathan Dunlop.
“The Road to Bethlehem” is a cycle of Christmas texts set by Auckland composer, David Hamilton. The words reflect on the events of the first Christmas and the 'wonder of the story’. David Hamilton wrote "In selecting texts I wanted each to focus on a specific aspect of Christmas. The pieces present a number of significant events which surround or lead up to the birth of Christ - the appearance of the angels foretelling Christ's imminent birth, the shepherds, the wise men and so on."
The music of this lively and light-hearted secular cantata is based on dances and folk tunes of Bach’s time. The story, which will be sung in English, tells of villagers honouring their new Lord of the Manor. Two peasants, Mieke (soprano) and her lover (bass) discuss their new master and his wife, tease each other, discuss gossip and taxes, and finally go to the inn for free beer. The chorus add their amusing commentary.
Ticket prices are $25 for all adults and $15 for students. Tickets are available from Guy’s Pharmacy, Roselands, Papakura; or choir members, or at the door.
We look forward to entertaining you. Our usual delicious afternoon tea will be served after the concert.
