                                                                Youth Scholarships 2023


  • To foster the enjoyment of choral singing among young people by involving them in the choir

  • To give young people an appreciation of the joy and satisfaction of working steadily towards a rewarding musical goal, not otherwise accessible to them

  • To support young people in their music education

  • To encourage links between their learning in one area of Music and their performance of it in choral singing

  • To recognise the paramount value of singing as the basis for all musicianship

  • To provide an experience of quality music performance in a supportive and encouraging environment

  • To instil a love of good music which young people will retain throughout their lives


Terms of the Scholarship

  • Each scholarship will be to the value of $1500 unless varied by the committee or on the recommendation from the selection panel.


Recipients will: -

  • Be between the ages of 16 and 29 years of age

  • Have received regular tuition on a musical instrument (voice is an instrument) or in music theory, or in some other group as approved by the selection panel

  • Have a good understanding of musical notation and vocal technique

  • Attend weekly rehearsals of the SAC choir on Tuesday evenings (75% of total for each term) and

  • Perform in a minimum of two major concerts in the year for which the scholarship is awarded


Selection of Recipients

  1. A selection panel will be appointed by the committee of SAC, comprising the Musical Director and two members appointed from the committee.

  2. When confirmation is received that funding is available, applicants will be called for by: -

  • Advertising through social media eg Facebook, community pages

  • Contacting the Head of Choral Studies at Auckland University

  • Contacting music teachers/music studios through their official newsletter

  • Writing to HODs in every secondary school in the South Auckland and adjacent areas

  1. Recipients will be chosen following the completion of the written application form and a vocal audition conducted by the Musical Director of SAC. The selection panel may also take into consideration information provided by each applicant’s chosen referee.

  2. Applicants will be advised of the results by phone and in writing immediately following the completion of auditions. It is expected that successful applications will take up the scholarship in the year in which it is awarded.

  3. Each year, preference will be given to applicants who have not previously been awarded a Youth Scholarship. However, the final decision rests with the selection panel.

  4. Where possible, the selection panel will be aiming to award scholarships to a balanced number of young men and women. In the event that there are not enough applicants of suitable quality, the selection panel reserves the right to withhold scholarships, in which case any funding obtained from an outside source will be returned to the provider.

Payment of Scholarship

  • Recipients will receive the scholarship money in three instalments or as directed by the committee in consultation with the recipient:

  • $500 after the first concert; $500 after the second concert; $500 following the final performance of the year.
